German robber knight, outlawed 1512 and 1516; leader in the Peasants' War 1525; imprisoned till 1540; soldier in Hungary 1542. and France 1544; celebrated in an autobiography pub. 1731, and in Goethe's drama. Diana, by Jean Goujon (Louvre). Italian style and influence, but with much independent native genius. His best known works are Diana and reliefs from the Fontaine des Innocents, in the Louvre.
