An English denomination of money; formerly a coin, but now disused. Its value is 21s. The coin weighed 129^ grains, and contained 118-7 grains of pure gold. Guineas were first coined in the reign of Charles II. (1662) of gold brought from Guinea; whence the name. [s. 546]
