[s. 235] : Name given to Asiatic territories and islands which are under the sovereignty of the Netherlands. The East India Company, created by the Dutch in 1602, conquered these islands and ruled them for nearly two centuries, but since 1798 the Company has ceased to exist, and the mother country rules the po e ions, comprising Java, Madura, Sumatra, Rian-Lingga Archipelago, Banca, Borneo, Cele- Christians.
