S. part of Illyria, on the Adriat; conquered by the Romans 39-23 B.C.; held in turn by Goths, Hungarians and Turks, till ceded to Venice 1699; given to Austria by treaty of Campo Firmio 1797. Area 4,940 sq. m.; pop. ab. 530,000, mostly Slavs.
