pl. [Mod. Lat. otari(a); Lat. fem. pl. adj. suff. -idæ, -adœ.] Zool .: Eared-seals, Sea-bears, Sea-lions; a family of Pinniped i a (q. v.), with a single genus Otaria (q. v.). Distribution wide, in temperate regions of both hemispheres, but absent from the coasts of the North Atlantic. When on land the hind feet are turned forward under the body, and aid in sup. porting and moving the trunk, as in ordinary quadrupeds.
