Outstanding features are the Alhambra Alcazabar (citadel), on strongly fortified eminence; Genera life (summer residence of Moorish kings); fine Gothic cathedral (1528), Segrario, with royal mausoleum; monastery of St. Jerome (1492), univ. (1531), and many old interesting houses. G. was founded VIII. cent.; capital of Moorish king-~ dom, and groat trading and artistic center in XIII. cent.; last Moorish stronghold in Spain; taken by Spaniards, 1492.
