Vasiliy and Group of Minin, Moscow. irregularly laid out, contains many fine buildings, particularly the KREMLIN (q.v.) palaces, has a celebrated university, numerous scientific and literary institutions, and a large internal trade. It was founded 1147, ravaged by Timur 1382, by Tartars 1451 and 1477, by Ladislas of Poland 1611; entered by Napoleon Sept. 14, 1812; fired Sept. 15, and city mostly destroyed; evacuated by the French Oct. 19. Pop., 1890, 822,397. Moscow, UNIVERSITY OF. Founded 1755; has four faculties, about 3,400 students, and a library of 170,000 vols. The library of the Museum contains 300,000 vols.
