PORT LOUIS

[s. 608] : Capital of Mauritius, situated on the northwest coast of the island, at the head of a bay. It is open on one side to the sea and enclosed on the other three by picturesque mountains. late Of years its prosperity has declined, fevers having become so prevalent that many have deserted it for other parts of the island. This has enabled the Chinese to get po e ion of the greater part of the town. Population Station of the (1901), with suburbs, 52,740. SPG (1856), with (1903) 2 mi ionaries, 2 native workers, and 365 profe ed Christians, of whom 125 are communicants.
