While studying and practising law studied pf. with Wold and harmony with Hignard, but was mostly self taught; devoted himself to music after 1S79; chorusmaster under Lamoureux 1884-85; wrote 2 succe ful operettas, 2 operas, Gwendoline 18.86 and Le roi malg?e lui 1887, one unfinished opera Briseis 1899, pf. pieces, and widely known oich. rhapsody Espaha; during last years brain was diseased; ardent admirer of Beethoven and Wagner, whose works he helped introduce into France; his own music show's skill in orchestration and strong, original sense of rhythm and color, at times leading to extiavagancc and at other times to beauty and delicacy.
