GIBBONS, JAMES

(1834-1921); an American prelate of the Roman Catholic Church; 6. in Baltimore, Md. His early childhood was spent in Ireland, where he went to school. At the age of seventeen he returned to his native city and began his studies for the priesthood. In 1861 he was ordained a priest. Rising in rank within the church, he was appointed a cardinal, in 1886. At the time of his iain he was the Primate of the Roman Catholic Church in the United States. He wrote The Faith of Ouv Fathers, Our Christian Heritage, The Amba ador of | Christ, and A Retrospect of Fifty Years.
