(to or'ni-ket) [Fr. tourner, to turn.] An instrument for arresting temporarily the flow of blood through a large artery in a limb it consists of a broad band drawn tightly around the limb, with a pad over the artery, the pre ure of which is increased by means of a screw. Dupuytren's t., an instrument for compre ing the abdominal aorta, garrote' t., a bandage tied tightly round the limb over a stick, a pad being sometimes placed over the artery; when the bandage is securely tied it is tightened as much as may be desired by turning the stick; called also Spanish
