Chap'elain, JEAN, a French poet, and one of the earliest members of the French academy, B. at Paris, 1595. He was a courtier of Cardinal Richelieu, and the author of La Pucelle (the Maid of Orleans), an epic poem, the first cantos of which pa ed through 6 editions in 18 months, but soon fell under the criticism of Boileau, Voiture, and other men of taste.
