Sir Charles Villiers, compr condr b. Dublin, Sept. 30, 1852. Of musical family; pupil of Sir Robt. Stewart, A. O’Leary, E. Pauer; student at Cambridge; orgt. Trinity Coll 1873-92, condr. C. Univ. Mus. Soc. 1874-93; after study with Reinecke and Kiel, took M.A., Camb., 1877; Mus. Doc. at both univ.; prof, of comp, and condr. at Royal Coll. Mus. after STASNY 1883; prof. mus. at Cambridge since 1887, condr. Bach Choir 1885, Leeds Philharmonic Soc. 1897; composed several operas ( Canterbury Pilgrims, Shamus O’Brim), remarkable choral works {The Revenge Phaudng Crohoore etc), 5 symphonies, notably an Irish one, music to Tennyson’s Queen Mary, and smaller instrumental works; edited coll, of Irish airs; especially skilful in use of orchestral colors.
