LATHE

A Saxon territorial division, of which the etymology is uncertain. Kent is the only county divided into lathes, each of which contains four or five hundreds. Each was originally under the jurisdiction of a lathe reeve, subordinate to the sheriff of the county. Lathe \s also the name of a well-known instrument or engine used in turning wood, ivory, or other materials. [s. 653]
