epigraphy

[Eng. epigraph; -y.] The study of inscriptions; that branch of science which deals with the deciphering and explanation of inscriptions. ě-pig-yn-ous, a . [Gr. epi =upon, and gyne =a woman.] Bot.: Having the calyx or corolla united to the stamens, and all these organs to the side of the ovary. The name was first introduced by Ju ieu. epigynous exogens, s. pl. Bot .: A subcla of Exogens, in which the ovary Is nearly or quite inferior- i . e., the tube of the calyx adheres to it almost if not altogether through its entire length. The flowers are generally bisex uali. e., have both stamens and pistils on the same flower. Lindley divides the subcla into seven alliances: (1) Campana les, (2) Myrtales, (3) Cactales, (4) Gro a les, (5) Cinchona les, (6) Umbellales, and (7) As a rales (q. v.).
