Conduction of Heat

—The transfer of heat through substances, from one substance to another in contact with it. Any ~ body which transmits heat rapidly is called a good conductor of heat; one that pa es heat slowly is termed a bad conductor. Homogeneous bodies such as metals are the best conductors; those which are finely fibered such as cotton, wool or wadding; or those finely subdivided as charcoal dust or pulverized cork, are the worst conductors of heat. A bad conductor is also known as a non-conductor.
