Genoa

City and seaport of n. Italy, on the Gulf of Genoa. Capital of the ancient Liguria; destroyed by Mago 205 B.C.. rebuilt 202 B.C.; held by Lombards, Franks and Germans; pillaged by Saracens 936; in alliance, and then at enmity, with Pisa; a strong naval power by 1100; at war with Venice from 1244 to 1381; governed by doges 1339, by Milan 1464, by France 1499-1528; made the Ligurian Republic 1797; part of France 1802-14. It has a large commerce, and manufactures of silk and velvet. Pop., 1891, 210,000.
