[African.] An African musical instrument consisting of a wooden box in which a number of sonorous tongues of wood or metal are fixed. These are sounded by the finger or a stick. Zanzibari (zan-zi-bäʻri), a. and n. I. a. Of or pertaining to Zanzibar, a sultanate of eastern Africa. It was in 1890 made a British protectorate, confined chiefly to the island of Zanzibar, while the coast of the neighboring mainland was ceded to Germany. The country is practically in the hands of Arabs and Zanzibari slavers and traders. Applet on's Ann. Cyc ., 1886, p. 372. II. n. An inhabitant of Zanzibar. A contraction of Zante - wood . five-toed, no ascending a strag alar proce , Zantedeschia (zan-te-desk i-ä), n. broad and long pubes, and biconcave vertebræ. [NL. (Sprengel, 1826), named from Francesco Zante deschi, who wrote on the plants of Brescia and by the earlier name Richard i a (which see). Bergamo in 1824.] A plant genus now known Zante fustic. Z. mini valis feeds in the larval state on the dead leaves of oak and maple in the United States.
