Bog Ironore

(Min.) A hydrous oxide of iron, common in flat marshy localities. It is of variable composition, containing from 20 to 70 per cent. of peroxide of iron; the protoxides of iron and manganese are often present, and sometimes as much as 10 per cent. of phosphoric acid and organic matter. Large quantities of the skeletons of Infusoria ( Gaillonella ferruginea ) have been found by Ehrenberg, in the B. -ores of Pru ia, the Ural mountains, and New York State. The infusoria of this ore are stated by the same authority to be only one thousandth of an inch in diameter, or half that of a human hair consequently, a cubic line would contain 1,000,000,000 of these minute organisms. - See LAKE ORE.
