Anodyne

a remedy employed to dull the of nerves, and to relieve pain. Among producing a local effect may be mentioned application of cold, as by ice bags, or of warmth, by poultices and fomentations. General anodynes such drugs as opium, chloral, and hyos- (q.v.).
