In Heraldry, a species of achievement or funeral escutcheon, suspended in front of a house to mark the decease of one of its inmates. These escutcheons are always drawn up with heraldic precision; so that those acquainted with the science of heraldry can discover at a glance, from the form and accompaniments of the field and the colour of the ground of the hatchment, the sex, position, and rank of the deceased.
