The ‘ actual currency is irredeemable paper. The metallic gourdes have disappeared entirely from circulation, being hoarded. Only the divisional coins are found in circulation, but these frequently command a premium of from 1 to 2 per cent. Many United States gold pieces are used, owing to the fact that export duties have to be paid in gold.
