Orlop-stringer

A range of plates fitted horizontally about midway between the lower-deck aud the bilge, in the sides of three-decked ve els having a great depth of hold; they extend as far forward and aft as practicable. These stringers are not resting upon beams, as is the case with deck-beam-, or hold-beam-stringers, but are supported by brackets, all fore and aft, fixed either to every frame, or to every second frame. The term „ Orlop-stringer ” is also usually given, if a stringer, as before described, is fitted in the hold of a ve el having two decks only.
