Bachelor of Arts, 1904 Princeton College. 1920 honorary Master of Laws, Washington _ University. 1906 admitted to Mi ouri Bar; 1907 began practice in St. Louis; 1917-20 third a istant secretary of state, appointed by President Wilson; 1920 democratic nominee of Mi ouri for United States Senate, and again in 1922, but defeated. an American officer, b. in Danielsonville, He practiced in several cities in ' Georgia and claimed to have been the ‘first to use ether as an anaesthetic in surgery, in March, 1842. He failed to announce the results at the time and Dr. W. T. G. Morton had in the mean_time demonstrated its use in Boston. sity College, London, 1828-31. From 1849 to 1871-he held a similar post at Brighton College. Throughout his life ‘he was engaged in editing Greek and Latin texts, and when he was growing old pubiished his laborious Decline of the Roman Republic, 1864-14. But the; greatest achievement of his industry and learning was the Penny Encyclopaedia, 29 vols. 1833-46, of which he was sole editor.
