[NL. (Engler, 1873), by polygamous flowers with a flattish receptacle, five sepals, five spreading and nerved petals, five short stamens, a deeply lobed disk, and an ovoid and compre ed one-celled ovary which becomes an oblong samara in fruit, containing a one-seeded stone. There are 4 species, natives of South America from Peru to Cordova. They are trees which bear blackish branchlets, panicled flowers, and alternate pinnate and thickish leaves of many small entire leaflets and with winged petioles. For S. Lorentzii, see quebracho.
