The s. of a wealthy cotton-spinner destined for a commercial career, he became interested in philosophical study, and during his year of military service in Berlin, frequented the society of the ‘Freien’ and wrote letters to the Rheibésche Neitung. In 1842 he went to England and became connected with the Owenite and Chartist movements, writJater he went to Paris and there visited Karl Marx (q.v.). The two became close friends and worked so much together during the remainder of their lives that the works of the 9ne became more or le the works of the other. He published many books and articles, and wrote in collaboration with Marz, Die hetlige Familie oder Kritik der Kritischen Krittk (Frankfort), 1845; and Manifest der Kommunistischen Partei, the famous communist manifesto (London, 1848; English ed, 1848 and 1888).
