URMIA

[s. 785] : A town in Persia, situated in the N. W. part of the country near Lake Urmia, 480 miles W. by N. of Teheran. It is the reputed birthplace of Zoroaster. Population, 35,000. Station of the PN (1835), with (1903) 8 mi ionaries, four of them with their wives; 4 women mi ionaries, 164 native workers, 112 outstations, 53 places of worship, 63 Sunday schools, 86 day schools, 2 boarding schools, 1 theological cla , 1 college, and 2,719 profe ed Christians; 1 dispensary, 1 hospital, 1 printing house. This station was founded by the in 1835 and transferred in 1871. Also station of the Archbishop’s Mi ion to the A yrians, with (1903) 1 mi ionary, 2 native workers, 1 boarding school, and 1 theological cla . Some write the name ABCFM Urumia. 785
