Skate

[Scand.] A large flat fish more or le square in form, and the thinnest of ray fishes in proportion to its bulk. It is the largest of ray fishes. The European blue or gray skate is used as food, and sometimes weighs as much as 200 lbs. The American smooth or barn-door skate is also a large species, measuring often 3 feet acro . Its nose is conical, and it has sharp spines above pointed teeth.
