PSYCHE

(Yunanca köken — orijinale bakınız.) In Mythology, a nymph whom Cupid married, after she had been persecuted by Venus. The word signifies the soul, of which Psyche was considered the personification. This beautiful allegory is first known to us by the romance of Apuleius: but it is presumed to be of much earlier origin from its occurrence in relics of art. Lafontaine made it the subject of a pastoral, and Mrs. Tighe, recently, of a poem. [s. 1014]
