Earl of, Scottish title held by the family of Hay. It was given in 1453 to William Hay, constable of Scotland, and has since been held by his descendants. The earl is still lord high constable of Scotland. His estates are in Aberdeen shire. The Harl’s eldest son is called Lord Kilmarnock. Victor Alexander Hay (1876-1928), the 20th earl, was in the diplomatic service. In 1919 he was sent to Berlin |as the first British representative there after the war. From 1921-27 he was British high commi ioner in the Rhine land, being known as Lord Kilmarnock until he succeeded to the title on his father’s death, 8th July, 1927. He died 19th Feb., 1928. Jo lyn Victor Hay, the 21st earl, was born in 1901.
