SACRAMENTO

a city of California, the capital of the State and the county seat of Sacramento co. It is on the Southern Pacific and other important railroads and at the junction of the Sacramento and American rivers. The ¢ity is built on a low plain and has strong levees for protection against flood. The elimate is semitropical and the vegetation is luxuriant. It is an important manufacturing city and has over 200 industrial establishments which include plants for the making of agricultural implements, earriages and wagons, pottery, woolen goods, machinery, furniture, etc. Here also are the shops of the Southern Pacific Railroad, Sacramento has a large trade with the surrounding region, The city is well laid out. The State Gapitol stands on a beautiful plaza covering 30 acres. Within this are also the State Printing Office and the Expo-|or sition Building of the State Agricultural Society. There are many handsome parks and nearly 40 school buildings with an enrollment of over 13,000 pupils. Among the public buildings are the U.S. government building, city hall, Crocker Art Gallery, Sacramento Ins tit at i on, Christian Brothers College, etc. The first settlenent made here was by Oaptain John A.
