(aktiv.) [L. activus.] A term denoting something that communicates motion or action to another; in which sense it stands opposed to pa ive. (Gram.) An appellation given to verbs which not only signify action, but have a noun or name following them, denoting the object of the action or impre ion;-called also transitive, as implying the pa ing of the action expre ed by the verb to the object.
