Never wholly original within our knowledge. At the earliest dates of surviving monuments, 3d century B.C., it had a Greek quality, due to the influence of the Alexandrian Oriental states. In its whole later career it is a bastard art, and, since the Mohammedan con IMG:content-0597.png:[blocks in formation] Asia, connected on the e. with the Karakorum and Himalaya ranges and extending w. into n. Afghanistan. In altitude its peaks exceed 20,000 ft.
