KEBLE, JOHN

(1792-1866), Eng. priest and poet; b. Fair ford; ed. at home and Corpus Christ i College, Oxford, where he had a brilliant career; ordained priest, 1816; elected tutor of Corpus Christ i, 1818; retired, 1823; published Christian Year, a book of meditations in verse for holy days, 1827; prof. of Poetry at Oxford, 1831-41; founder of Tractarian movement, which tried to produce a spiritual and modern awakening within the Eng. Church; closely a ociated with Newman and Pusey, with whom he i ued Tracts for the Times.
