(ma'ji.) [FromGr. magos; L. magnus, great.] Abody of priests among the anc. Medes and Persians, who constituted the recognized ministers of the religion founded by Zoroaster. Their knowledge of the occult arts was esteemed so great that their name has given rise to that of magic. As astrologers, too, they figure in Scriptural mention as the Wise Men of the East who came to see the infant Jesus. [s. 567]
