Guiana

Region on n. coast of S. America, long. ab. 52-60° W.; first seen by Europe ans 1499, and long fought over. Guiana, BRITISH. Settled by the Dutch ab. 1610; held by England since 1803. The country is low and flat near the Atlantic seaboard, rising inland to tablelands and mountains, which separate it from Brazil. Area variously estimated at 76,000 and 109,000 sq. m. Pop., 1891, 288.328. The capital is George town.
