[DACTYL OPTER OUS.] Ichthy.: A name applied to a genus of fishes be. longing to the order Acanthopterygii, in which the head is flat from a short muzzle; the body is covered with large scales; sub-pec- Flying-gurnard. toral rays nu- merous and ex- ceedingly large. It contains only two species, of which one, Dac- tylopterus volitans , is the Flying-gurnard. It is sometimes called the Flying-fish, but that name is given specially to Exoccœtus exiliens .
