Gibbous

[Lat. gibbus. See GIBBOSE.] Swelling protuberant.- ( Astron.) The swelling or convex appearance of the moon when more than half full or enlightened. In the telescope, the planets Mercury, Venus, and Mars exhibit a similar appearance. Gibbously, adv. In a gibbous or protuberant form. Gib'bousne , n. Same as GIBBOSITY, q. v. A considerable city of the Hivites, afterwards a Levitical city of the tribe of Benjamin. It lay on an eminence, 6 m. N. of Jerusalem, near Geba and Gibeah.
