Japan

Empire of eastern Asia, consisting of a number of islands, four of them of large size; viz., Nippon, Yezo, Kiushiu, and Shikoku. They are separated from the mainland by the Sea of J. Their surface is mountainous in the interior, with extensive plains stretching to the seaboard. Many of the mountains are volcanic and several reach great elevations. The area of the Empire is 157,000 sq. m. Rice. wheat, and other cereals, tea, cotton, sugar, and tobacco are raised. There are extensive native manufactures and some mining, the mineral resources being large. The capital is Tokio.
