The climate is pleasant and healthful. The European population exceeds 40,000, and the whole population is (1896) Station of the WMS, with (1903) 12 105,000. mi ionaries, 278 native workers, men and women 99 preaching places, 9 elementary schools, 1 boarding school and 3,029 profe ed Christians. Station also of the Berlin Mi ionary Society (1887), with (1900) 1 mi ionary, 11 native workers, 7 outstations, and 395 profe ed Christians.
