(1806-84), a German philosopher; his works include: Kunst, 1839; Ueber Princip und Methode der He gels chen Philosophie, 1841; Das 30’ N., 7°,,W.), consisting of counties of Down, Fermanagh, London derry, Monaghan, and Tyrone; most flourish in g industrial and commercial region; manufactures linen, muslin, and iron goods; shipbuilding and distilling are important; bauxite and rock salt worked in Antrim; pre dominatingly Prot. in religion and Unionist in politics; opposed to all measures of Irish Home Rule; under Sir Edward Carson a volunteer force was organized prepared to resist Mr. Asquith’s Home Rule Bill (1914), when outbreak of World War merged the question in the wider i ue of national honor and safety; Ulster contributed largely to the fighting services; Ulster Division distinguished itself on the Somme; Mr. Lloyd George’s Home Rule Act (pa ed by both Houses, Dec. 1920) was accepted by Ulster under protest. Under this Act two Parliaments are set up, the one for N.Ireland (Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, London derry, and Tyrone), the other for the rest of Ireland. There were severe riots in Belfast, London derry, and other towns in 1920.
