Clew-garnet

Ropes of which one end is fastened to a lower-yard near its centre and the other end roved first through a block, fitted to the clew of a course (i. e. square fore-sail, main-sail etc.) then pa ed upwards through a block under (and near) the centre of the yard and descending on deck, by means of which the clew of such square sail is hauled towards the centre of the yard. Small ve els have usually no block at the clew of the sail, the rope is simply pa ed through a block under the yard, one end being fastened in the sail, the other end descending from the block on the yard to the deck.
