Jogues, ISAAC

1607-1646. French Jesuit, mi ionary in Canada from 1636; captured by Mohawks 1642, repeatedly tortured, and mutilated. Escaping by Dutch aid, he returned to Montreal after a brief sojourn in France, and in 1646 went among the Mohawks to die. His unworldly piety and heroic zeal place him high on the list of modern martyrs.
