A tempest of sudden and exceptional violence heightened by vivid lightning, torrential rain or hail, whose destructive force is greatly increased by its rapidly whirling motion, uprooting, uplifting and scattering things in its sharply defined path of ruin; they fortunately are generally of short duration, as even during a brief pa ing over an inhabited district the lives of men and animals are sacrificed.
