Noises

Sounds due to non-periodic vibrations of sonorous bodies; in distinction from musical sounds, which are caused by periodic vibrations. Subjectively, noises lack the pleasant quality which is characteristic of musical sounds. Practically, noises accompany all musical sounds, but often go unnoticed in the prominence of the periodicity. There have been attempts to cla ify noises, e.g., into three categories, the beats accompanying musical sounds, cracking or crashing noises, and hi ing sounds, it being held that these three varieties, mixed with musical sounds, make up all the noises of our experience.
