See Kulm. Cumania, Little. A district of Hungary, this side the Thei , Thei , comprising several detached divisions, now included in the county Pest Pílís-Sólt-Klein-Kumanien. Cumans (kū'manz). A Ugric tribe which invaded Hungary in the 11th (?) century. It was subdued and Christian i zed by the Hungarians in the 13th century, and is now Magyar i zed. Cumber land (kum'ber-land). 1. A county in northwestern England, lying between Solway Firth and Scotland on the north, North umber land and Durham on the east, West more land and Lancashire on the southeast and south, and the Irish Sea on the west. Its surface is mountainous in the southwest and east, and low in the north. The southwestern district is celebrated for its picturesque scenery (Lakes Ullswater, Bas sen thwaite, Der went water, Thirl mere, etc.). It has mines of lead, iron, coal, plumbago, and other minerals. Capital, Car lisle. Area, 1,515 square miles. Population (1891), 266,550. 2. The capital of Alleghany County, Maryland, situated on the Potomac in lat. 39° 39′ N., long. 78° 47' W. The Cumber land coal region lies to the west. The city has some trade, and manufactures of iron and gla . Population (1890), 12,729. 3. A southern tributary of the Ohio. It rises in the Cumber land Mountains, in eastern Kentucky, flows through Kentucky and Middle Tenne ee, reënters Kentucky, and joins the Ohio at Smith land, 43 miles east of Cairo. Length, 600-650 miles; navigable to Nashville (nearly 200 miles). Cumber land, Army of the. A Union army in the American Civil War. It was organized in 1861 by Don Carlos Buell, commander of the department of the Ohio, and was originally known as the Army of the Ohio. On the erection of the department of the Cumber land, Oct. 24, 1862, under the command of W. S. Rose crans, it was transferred to that department, and was renamed the Army of the Cumber land. Rose crans relieved Buell of the command of the Louisville, Kentucky, Oct. 30, 1862; took up his headquarters in Nashville, Tenne ee, in Nov., 1862; defeated Bragg at Stone River, Dec. 31-Jan. 3, 18621863 (which gave him po e ion of Murfreesboro); drove Bragg from middle Tenne ee in a nine days' campaign around Tullahoma, June 24-July 3, 1963; and was defeated
