Asbestos

(as-bes'tos.) [Gr., indestructible.] A mineral containing silicate of magnesia, occurring in minute fibres and filaments. The most known variety is called Amianthus, [Gr. amiantos, undefiled,] from its resistance to fire; this occurs in long silky fibres, very flexible and elastic, and of a white color; they are easily separated from each other, and have been woven into fire-proof cloth, which, when soiled, is cleansed by heating in the fire.
