Belladonna

{bel-ah-don’ ’-all) [It., belladonna, beautiful lady]. Deadly night-shade. A perennial plant of the order Solanacece, indigenous to Southern Europe and Asia, and cultivated in the U. S. Its properties are due to two alkaloids, atropin and belladonnin,th.e latter thought to be identical with hyoscyamin. Both leaves and root are employed. It is used as an antispasmodic, as a cardiac and respiratory stimulant, and to check secretion, as that of the sweat and milk. B., Folia, the leaves of belladonna. B., Radix, the root of belladonna.
