Connecting the Hudson at Albany and Troy with Lake Erie at Buffalo. The main line, built 1817-25, is 363 miles long and cost $7,200,000. It was originally 28 ft. wide at the bottom and 4 ft. deep, but these dimensions have since been increased to 60 ft. and 7 ft.
