Carmelites

(kar'mel-īts.) (Eccl. Hist.) A religious order of monks of St. Mary of Mount Carmel, founded in the 12th cent., and which received a rule confirmed by Pope Honor i us III. in 1226. They were divided by Gregory XIII., in 1580, into two branches, one of which, the Bare-footed C., received that title on account of their austere mode of life.
